About Us

In the traditional language of the Yoruba people, ijo vudu (ee-joh voo-doo) refers to the transcendent spirit in dance.

Led by Nigerian dance educator, performer and choreographer Sani-Abu Mohammed Allen, Toronto's ijo vudu Dance International is a performing art company of professional dancers and drummers from diverse backgrounds, on a journey to experience and share the joy and spirit of traditional African music and dance.

 Mission and Artistic Director's Statement

Art is essential to success in today's fast-paced, highly competitive world. Art inspires original thinking, and informs both our ideas and the way we chose to act upon them. Art that is well-crafted adds excitement, sophistication, beauty and value to people's lives. Dance as an art form is joyous, generous and life-affirming. Through dance, ijo vudu strive to protect, preserve the authenticity of traditional African heritage and it's art forms, to celebrate our ancestry, to educate and entertain a variety of audiences both nationally and internationally; through educational and cultural programming, ongoing music and dance classes, workshops for the novice to the professional, as well as performances for festivals, stage and theater. ijo vudu engage the audience through awareness, spiritual grace and compassion and by doing this, we offer a unigue perspective to the world.

I look for repertoire that will demonstrate the versatility, technical and artistic talent of the artists. I look at the overall quality of a work to ensure it is a good vehicle that allows the dancers to express their emotions and communicate with the audience.
